In "Dancing At Lughnasa" five impoverished sisters in Ballybeg, Ireland in 1936 rely on familial love and bonding to help them, one offspring, and a sickly uncle survive hard times. But changes are approaching that will affect all their lives. The Industrial Revolution is finally about to hit their little corner of Ireland with devastating impact, and the entire world is just a few years way from a terrible conflagration. The dancing of the title is one of the ways that the sisters cope in Friel’s exquisitely lyrical masterpiece. (Lughnasa refers to a Celtic festival with its roots in pagan antiquity).  With really no one to depend upon but each other, the extraordinary love between the five remarkable Mundy sisters navigates them through the various challenges of economics and romance at a turbulent time.

TONY AWARD WINNER "DANCING AT LUGHNASA" OPENS AT THEATRE WEST ON JANUARY 26, 2007

The highlight of Theatre West’s 2006 summer festival, West Fest, was a superbly realized mounting of the Tony Award winning play by Brian Friel, "Dancing At Lughnasa." Performed by a gifted cast with an obvious affection for the material, the lovingly presented work delighted Theatre West summer audiences in a limited engagement. Now the show will return, promoted to the status of a full mainstage production, opening Friday, January 26, 2007.
