Arts District Walk participants Joon and Vic Viereck, NOHO Chamber;
Gary Judy, NOHO Chamber; Lisa Bianconi, NOHO Arts Center; Robert
Akhavan, NOHO Business Improvement District; John
Gallogly, Theatre West; and Lisa Bianconi, CRA.
On February
28th, 2009, Theatre West Executive Director John Gallogly joined State Senator Carol Liuin on an 'arts walk' through the
NoHo Arts District. As a result of the walk, Senator Liu has
agreed to be a co-sponsor of AB 700, Assemblyman Paul Krekorian's
'Creative Industries and Community Impact Act', and asked to
be appointed to the Joint Committee on the Arts. Senator Liu
was joined by members of the Chamber of Commerce, local developers,
restauranteurs and business owners as well as members of City
Council staff and the CRA.
There
is an increasing recognition by the business community that
having the arts in the community is driving economic development
and job creation. AB 700 will restore funding to the California
Arts Council, which will allow the council to again give grants
to individual artists and small non profits like Theatre West.
